WATCH: This is why Chelsea have signed Joao Felix on a permanent deal.

Joao Felix looks set for a return to Stamford Bridge after Chelsea agreed a permanent deal with Atletico Madrid to sign the Portugal international forward; the 24-year-old spent six months on loan at Chelsea during the 2022/23 season.

Chelsea have agreed a permanent deal with Atletico Madrid to sign Joao Felix, which means Conor Gallagher's transfer to the Spanish club is back on.

Felix, 24, is expected to sign a six-year contract with Chelsea that includes the option of a further year. The funds Atletico receive for Felix will allow them to complete a deal for Gallagher.

Why Chelsea have signed Joao Felix:

Felix scored four goals for Chelsea in 20 games in his loan spell during the 2022/2023 season - while he can operate in several positions in the 4-2-3-1 formation used by Maresca in Chelsea's curtain raiser.

So too can Palmer and Nkunku for that matter. Given that Enzo Fernandez wore the captain's armband on Sunday afternoon as Reece James continues to work his way back to fitness, we have built our dream XI around him being in the No.10 position he picked up against Premier League champions City.

Opting for Palmer wide right and Felix on the opposite flank, that creates room for Nkunku through the middle. Of course, that's all very flexible, though, with no out-and-out No.9 as such and Nicholas Jackson dropping to the subs bench to make-way for Portugal international Felix.

Time will tell to see where Maresca actually sees his best role.

The clip below shows how Joao Felix operates that makes him fit for Enzo Maresca's system:
